The idea that Edinburgh, one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, would not have a Greek restaurant was the spur which persuaded George Birrell and his partner, Fiona, to return from their idyll on the captivating Ionian island of Kefalonia to open MYBIGFATGREEKKITCHEN in the autumn of 2009.
Tollcross is the ideal location because of its eclectic Bohemian mix -- large student population, academics and other professionals cheek-by-jowl with a bustling financial centre and arts hub (Kings, Lyceum, Traverse theatres, Usher Hall, Cameo cinema, Filmhouse). And, of course, that prize of all who reminisce of Greece - an outside dining area.
George,a former journalist and newspaper editor, whose mother is Greek and father Scottish, has had a lifelong passion about everything Greek - and especially the food. (He is currently writing a book about Greek food and wine which includes many wonderful recipes and the link the products have with the history and geography of that fascinating country. All accompanied by a rich treasure trove of anecdotes and little-known stories. It will be ready next year.)
Fiona, whose own family links stretch back to Sicily, has an extensive knowledge of Greek cuisine,and her interests include interior design and landscaping but she has put her development of several housing projects in Greece on hold meantime.
We are also fortunate to have one of the best chefs in the country, Deep Vengurlekar, whose considerable expertise stretches over continents - Australia, Asia, Europe - and is a master of a variety of cuisines, and has now focused his considerable talents in creating and serving up Greek dishes of exceptional quality.
